Lasers may sound like a tool of the distant future. In fact, they are used in many everyday dental procedures to great effect!
What Is a Dental Laser?
A laser is, simply put, a narrow beam of light. The process of creating this focused light imbues the beam with a great deal of energy, allowing it to remove infected tissue, destroy bacteria, or clean out a cavity.
There are several kinds of lasers that are regularly used in dental treatments. In our office, we use a Gemini soft-tissue laser. The Gemini is one of the latest and strongest dental lasers currently available in the field. With our Gemini, we can:
- Perform periodontal deep cleanings.
- Treat cold sores.
- Treat canker sores.
- Perform PMB therapy to reduce the pain of TMJ disorders.
- Perform frenectomies.
- Non-surgically removes infected tissue.
- Recontour gum tissue.
We can perform all of these procedures and improve patient comfort at the same time! Procedures with this remarkable laser typically result in less bleeding and shorter recovery time.
The wide variety of uses and the comfort that it gives to our patients has made the Gemini soft-tissue laser an excellent addition to our office!
Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss, and periodontal cleanings are vital to its treatment, healing, and prevention.
Gum disease is caused by a buildup of a bacterial film called plaque. This film grows on your teeth almost constantly, and gum disease is only kept at bay through regular flossing, brushing, and dental visits. When you come in for your semi-annual checkups, we always do a thorough cleaning of your teeth to make sure that all of the plaque and tartar are eliminated.
Dental lasers have dramatically increased the effectiveness of this process through laser bacterial reduction (LBR).
LBR is a nonsurgical way of reducing the amount of bacteria that builds up deeper in the periodontal pockets. These are places where our hand instruments may not be able to reach. Not only that, but we can also use the laser for removal of inflamed tissue in those gum pockets.
This deep cleaning treatment can make a real difference in saving at-risk teeth!
We can perform LBR in conjunction with a program called Perio Protect in order to help you fight gum disease. This program involves a highly customized tray that can:
Reduce the chances of tooth-root decay.
Alleviate chronic bad breath.
Reduce disease-causing bacteria in deep gum pockets.
By wearing this tray at home according to your treatment plan, you can effectively combat gum disease and protect your teeth as well as your oral health!

PMB (Photobiomodulation) treatment can reduce pain and promote healing.
Using a laser set to low levels, we can expose cells to the light of a certain wavelength. The cells absorb this light, which then improves local circulation, oxygenation, and enzyme activity. Studies show that these cellular activities help improve tissue repair and reduce pain and inflammation.
This treatment can be used if you have a temporomandibular joint disorder. This therapy can reduce pain and swelling. It is also effective at speeding the healing of such problems as cold sores.
